Flower Preservation

Your Bouquet, Transformed
Into Original Art

Flower preservation doesn’t always mean getting your flowers back in one piece. Bas-relief takes a different approach entirely, your wedding blooms are pressed into clay, capturing every curve of a petal and every texture of a stem, then removed before plaster is poured into that impression. What comes out is a set of raised, dimensional blocks, each one holding the exact impression of one type of flower or greenery from your bouquet.
This is not a reproduction and not a photograph. It’s a cast, sculptural, textured, and permanent in a way no dried or pressed flower can be, because there’s nothing organic left in the finished pieces to fade or break down.
Queen & I is a studio-based preservation practice in Reston, VA, wedding bouquets exclusively, handled personally by Daniel Marcey from pickup through delivery. Bas-relief is one of four formats available under the Wedding Service, if you’re weighing your options, that page is a good place to start.
What Bas-Relief Is
Bas-relief is one of the oldest sculptural techniques in existence: the term comes from the French basse-relief, low relief, describing a form where the subject is raised slightly from a flat background rather than standing free.
The technique dates back thousands of years, from Egyptian temple carvings to the friezes that once wrapped the Parthenon. Centuries later, Renaissance sculptors proved that even a few millimeters of raised surface could suggest real depth.
Applied to wedding flowers, the process is exactly what the name suggests. One type of flower or greenery from your bouquet is pressed into clay, which captures its surface in detail, the curve of a petal, the texture of a stem, the shape of every edge. The blooms are then removed, leaving their exact impression behind. Plaster is poured into that impression, and once set, the result is a block with that flower’s detail raised from its surface.
Each block measures 6 x 8 x 1.5 inches, and every commission starts with a set of six, six different types of blooms or greenery from your bouquet, each one filling its own block with 1 to 3 individual flowers of that same type. The flowers never end up inside the finished pieces. The clay records them, the plaster captures that record, and the flowers themselves are gone from the process before the blocks exist.

A Format You Won’t
Find Elsewhere in DC
Bas-relief flower preservation is something no other studio in the Washington DC metro area offers. Where other options exist online, they typically ship a single flat plaster cast, a one-dimensional imprint with little real texture or depth. Queen & I’s approach is different, your bouquet becomes a set of six individual 6 x 8 x 1.5 inch blocks, each one showcasing a single type of bloom or greenery from your wedding flowers, captured in raised, sculptural relief. Instead of one flat piece, you receive a complete collection, displayed together, or given individually to the people who mattered most on your wedding day.
Because bas-relief works differently than the other three Wedding Service formats, one decision has to happen earlier than it does for a shadowbox, pressed piece, or resin commission. With those three, freeze-drying preserves your flowers, so the format itself can be chosen later, at your post-wedding design consultation. Bas-relief skips freeze-drying entirely: your flowers go straight from bouquet to clay, which means the choice has to be made before your flowers are handed off for any other format. If a set of blocks is something you want, let Daniel know before your wedding day, or the moment it ends.
“Bas-relief is a completely unique way to capture your flowers. If you’re looking for something truly different, this is it.”

already passed?
Because bas-relief works directly with fresh flowers, mother nature and father time are working against you the moment the wedding ends: there’s no freeze-drying step to buy extra time. Start by texting a few current photos of your bouquet to Daniel’s cell below, so he can see their real condition before you talk. From there, a quick call lets him tell you honestly whether your bouquet is still a fit for this format, walk you through the block set and pricing, and explain exactly what happens next if it is. Studio visits in Reston, VA are available by appointment if you would like to see all four of our wedding services in person.

Daniel Marcey
Owner, Queen & I - Floral Preservation │ Reston, VA
The first time Daniel saw flowers used in a bas-relief piece, he knew immediately that he needed to learn the technique himself. It wasn’t part of his original training. Mastering it meant starting over in a medium he’d never worked in, one where a flower’s structure has to be read correctly the moment it’s pressed into clay. That pursuit is what brought bas-relief to Queen & I as a wedding service in the first place, and it’s still the format where his hands-on judgment matters most.
